Gravel Boards
Gravel boards are lengths of material that are placed underneath your fence panels in order to lift them off the ground. Here at Berkshire Fencing, we have a choice of concrete gravel boards and wooden gravel boards, as well as the cleats that are used to join the gravel board under the fence. The type you decide to use will depend on personal preference, but both types are essential in increasing the longevity of your fencing, and give your fence an overall neater appearance.
Using gravel boards keeps your fence panels off the ground and prevents them from being damaged by lawn mowers when tidying up your garden. The elevation helps to ensure that the timber does not soak in moisture, which wards off rotting and decay. Taking the time to install a gravel board under the fence will therefore save you money in the long run by ensuring that you get the maximum lifespan from your chosen style of fence.
Wooden vs Concrete Gravel Boards
There are two main types of gravel boards which we have in stock – we’ll talk you through the benefits of each so that you can decide which is best for you. First are wooden gravel boards, which are well-liked for their natural look and affordability. Of course, being timber in close proximity to the damp ground, they will eventually rot, but they are cheap and easy to replace when they eventually do – much more so than it would be to replace the fence panels if you were to go without a gravel board under the fence. Our wooden gravel boards are available in a choice of depths, lengths and finishes. They can also be finished with an exterior-grade wood paint or stain to match or contrast with your fence, which will further extend their lifespan.
Another option is for concrete gravel boards, which we stock in a choice of depths and lengths so you can choose the best fit for your garden. While these are more expensive upfront than wooden gravel boards, they are long lasting as concrete is not porous and does not rot or decay, which means you shouldn’t need to replace them. Another consideration is that they are heavier to manoeuvre than timber, but if this could be an issue for you our professional installation team will be happy to fit a gravel board under the fence for you at an affordable price.
Whether you want to go for wooden gravel boards or concrete gravel boards, both work extremely well in extending the life of your fence panels, which is really what they’re designed for. The choice between the two generally comes down to which style you prefer the look of, and whether you would want to spend more upfront in order to avoid paying to replace them down the line.
Benefits of a Gravel Board Under the Fence
All of our concrete gravel boards are 50mm deep, while the wooden gravel boards are available in 50mm and a slimmer 22mm depth, which will sit flush with most fence panels. In terms of height, the both types of gravel boards can raise your fence 1500mm off the ground, while the concrete option also has the choice of lifting up to 3000mm from the ground. This extra height from the gravel board under the fence will create a little more privacy in your garden and reduce the degree to which you are overlooked.
Both types of gravel boards look fantastic with our full range of traditional fence panels, decorative fence panels and trellis fence panels. While all of our panels have been treated in order to prevent rotting and decay, it’s always worth adding another line of defence against damp in the ground, especially when you choose a beautiful style and want it to last for as long as possible. We also sell matching fence posts for both the concrete gravel boards and wooden gravel boards, so you can create a cohesive look that makes your fence look really stylish.
